Breaking: WAEC Releases 'Important Notice' as Result Checker Portal Crashes

Yaba, Lagos state - The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Wednesday evening, August 6, disclosed that its result checker portal is temporarily non-operational.
In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) page, WAEC said the portal, https://waecdirect.org, crashed "due to technical issues".

WASSCE 2025: WAEC portal crashes
Amid concerns from dozens of West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) 2025 candidates, WAEC told these young individuals that they will be able to access their results "in the next 24 hours".
WAEC tweeted with the title 'Important Notice':
"WAEC hereby informs the general public that the result checker portal @waecdirect.org is temporarily shutdown due to technical issues. However, the Council is working assiduously to ensure that candidates are able to access their results in the next 24 hours. Please bear with us.
"We apologise for any inconvenience this might have caused you. Thank you."
Unremarkable WAEC 2025 results
Legit.ng reports that a total of 1,973,253 school candidates registered for the 2025 WAEC examinations. This figure includes 979,228 males and 994,025 females, according to WAEC, with the female candidates slightly outnumbering the males. 1,969,313 candidates sat the examination which was conducted in over 23,000 schools across Nigeria.
Per Premium Times, Amos Dangut, WAEC’s head of Nigeria office, disclosed that 1,718,090 candidates, representing 87.24 per cent of those who sat the WAEC 2025, obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, with or without English Language and Mathematics.
However, only 754,545 candidates, representing 38.32 per cent, obtained credit and above in at least five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.
This shows a major drop from the 72.12 per cent recorded in the 2024 edition, indicating a 33.8 per cent decline in performance.
1.5 million WAEC results already released
So far, the results of 1,517,517 candidates (77.06 per cent) have been fully processed and released, while 451,796 candidates (22.94 per cent) still have one or more subjects pending due to issues being resolved.
WAEC said it is working to release the outstanding results in the coming days.
Nigeria to shift WAEC exam to CBT
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the federal government revealed plans to utilise both privately owned and public computer-based testing (CBT) centres across the country to conduct the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) starting in 2026.
Education minister, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this after observing a trial run of the CBT for SSCE conducted by the National Examination Council (NECO) at Sascon International School in Abuja, the Nigerian capital city.
Alausa praised NECO for executing the CBT SSCE pilot phase smoothly and announced plans to relocate future school-based SSCEs to designated CBT centres outside school premises.
