WAEC Confirms Withholding of WASSCE 2025 Results Over Exam Malpractice

  • WAEC has withheld the results of over 192,000 candidates from the 2025 WASSCE due to alleged exam malpractice
  • The Council introduced new anti-cheating measures, including serialised objective papers, to curb collusion
  • While over 1.5 million results have been released, nearly 23 per cent remain pending due to technical issues

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 192,089 candidates who sat the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), citing alleged involvement in various forms of examination malpractice.

The figure, announced on Monday at WAEC’s national headquarters in Lagos, represents 9.75 per cent of the total 1,969,313 candidates who participated in the examination across 23,554 schools. This marks a slight improvement from the 11.92 per cent of results withheld in 2024.

Dr Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office, disclosed that the infractions included the use of banned mobile phones in examination halls and collusion among candidates. He described the perpetrators as “unscrupulous elements” who have become “a thorn in the Council’s flesh.”

“Some even use our name to distribute fake messages. We’ve apprehended some of them, and appropriate sanctions will be applied,” Dangut said.

WAEC introduces serialisation to combat collusion

In a bid to curb malpractice, WAEC introduced a new serialisation system for objective papers in key subjects such as English Language, Mathematics, Biology, and Economics. According to Dangut, the initiative made collusion more difficult and led to a noticeable decline in performance in these papers.

He noted that the drop in scores highlighted the need for students to prepare independently, rather than rely on external assistance or coordinated cheating.

Over 1.5 million results released, technical issues delay others

Of the total candidates, 1,517,517 — accounting for 77.06 per cent — had their results fully processed and released. However, 451,796 results (22.94 per cent) are still undergoing processing due to technical issues. WAEC assured candidates that these delays would be resolved in the coming days.

The Council also issued a warning to state governments with outstanding examination fees. WAEC stated that results of candidates sponsored by indebted states would remain inaccessible until the debts were cleared.

Digital scoring system enhances accuracy and speed

The 2025 WASSCE was conducted between April 24 and June 20, with marking completed on July 21. WAEC deployed a real-time digital scoring system to accelerate the marking process and improve result accuracy.

“This year’s measures have strengthened the integrity of the examination. We will continue to refine our processes to stay ahead of malpractice,” Dangut added.
