Textbooks, Fees and Daily Needs: NELFUND’s Timely Support for Nigerian Students

When unexpected academic expenses arise, many students are left stranded. However, for beneficiaries of the NELFUND student loan, urgent needs like textbooks and daily living costs no longer stand in the way of their success as the scheme is providing timely support when it matters most.

The burden of sudden academic expenses can be overwhelming for students already struggling to pay their tuition. For Chiamaka Oshite, a Mass Communication student at the University of Cross River State, the NELFUND loan came just in time to bridge such critical financial gaps.

"There was this particular time we were asked to get a textbook, and the deadline was very near. During that period, I was receiving monthly upkeep, and they paid me that evening; so it helped me,” she recalled, explaining that the loan didn’t just pay her tuition but also ensured she could participate in classwork without falling behind.

Likewise, Aisha Falalu, a Biology student at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University in Katsina, testified that her ₦20,000 monthly upkeep allowance has reduced her reliance on her parents.

“It has influenced me in so many ways because by receiving 20k monthly, it helps me with handling little things I need to sort out,” she said, noting that this allowance covers her laboratory manuals, printing costs, and transportation to school, thereby making her daily life as a student easier and more organised.

Nnadozie Kingsley, a student at Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University, Anambra, shared a video on Instagram saying,

"I have received my school fees and upkeep and I am glad. It has been of help to me and I thank Nelfund for this positive move."
“I encourage my fellow students who have been finding it difficult to pay fees and run other school affairs to apply for the programme.”

Kingsley further advised, acknowledging the significant help that the NELFUND scheme is providing to Nigerian students.

The students praised the ease of the application process and encouraged fellow students to apply to ease their burdens.

“I think NELFUND is doing the best it can to help the students,” Falalu stated, acknowledging that financial aid schemes like this can help solve Nigeria’s education access crisis if sustained and expanded in coming years.
