Twelve migrants have been shot dead by some traffickers while trying to escape from a camp in Libya, the United Nations said on Friday, June 1.

Vanguard reports that the migrants who were mainly subjected to torture and abuse were shot dead by their traffickers.

Doctors Without Borders said that the incident occurred on May 23 in the town of Bani Walid, 170 kilometres (110 miles) southeast of Tripoli.

Bani Walid is a transit point for migrants aiming to reach Europe by boat from the coast further north.

The United Nations in a statement said many people were also injured after over 200 Ethiopians, Somali's and Eritreans held captive tried to escape.

“Human traffickers in Libya reportedly killed more than a dozen people and wounded many others after a group of some 200 Eritreans, Ethiopians and Somalis, being held captive, attempted to escape.

“The survivors spoke of torture abuse and exploitation at the hands of traffickers - some being held in captivity for up to three years,” the UN refugee agency said in the statement.

It was gathered that some of the traffickers and kidnappers of the migrants move around various detention camps in the centre of the town. They call families and relatives of the migrants demanding ransom before they can release their victims.

This latest deadly incident demonstrates, once again, the huge challenge of providing protection to refugees in Libya, where many people fleeing war and persecution fall prey to criminal networks,” UN said.
